From slippers to soaps, and socks to sweaters, Dads are easy to please.

Under the magic cloak of Madiba, ‘the father of our nation,’ Father’s Day in South Africa takes on its own particular expression.

Father’s Day has been celebrated in several countries worldwide for over a century and has since become an ubiquitous tradition. And although this day is celebrated in many ways by many different cultures and in many forms, South Africans have their own particular version of patriotic paternalism.

The Liz McGrath hotels are personalizing their own offering of Father’s Day promotions with their usual finesse.

Why not take advantage of the long weekend and honor the special Dad in your life with a Tranquil Weekend Getaway at The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel & Spa. Situated in Constantia, the location is so perfect and offers easy access to anywhere in Cape Town, so you have choices.

The Cellars-Hohenort’s  Father’s Day Lunch offer is impossibly perfect. Perfect for the kids too (as they no doubt have subtly influenced their preferences). With the classic roast beef, crispy roasted potatoes and Yorkshire pudding, the kids can call it what they want. There is little improvement to be made on what is already the best, and vanilla bean ice cream speaks the language of universal yummy.

To build up dad’s appetite, perhaps take him to smack a few golf balls at some of Cape Town’s best 18-hole miniature ‘golf courses.’ Cave Golf at Scratch Patch and Mineral World at the Waterfront is perfect for a day out. Aside from our world-famous aquarium among the other stunning variety shops, markets and specialty stores, the mini cave golf would be a win-win for everyone.

If you are adventurous, Milnerton, also an easy jump from the hotel, hosts a 3D glow in the dark, space themed 18-hole mini golf as well. Or if you are a ‘local,’ there is always Sea Point mini golf opposite the breathtaking views of the sea and not far from the pavilion.

However, we do not want to assume that golf is for everyone.  Although we have entered into our crisp, fresh season, the weather is perfect for hikes and walks just meters away from the hotel. Kirstenbosch Gardens has stunning paths, gardens and walkways and more extreme trails like Skeleton Gorge, another possibility for the athletically inclined. Our guests love to explore our very own Gardens at The Cellars-Hohenhort, which offer a microcosmic tour of the surrounding variety of forest and vegetation we have in the Cape.

The gardens slope up Table Mountain and are spectacular throughout the year, with different blooms revealing themselves across the seasons. The various sections of the gardens display some of Constantia’s most beautiful indigenous flora, and guests are encouraged to spend time experiencing an all-encompassing affair with the breathtaking surrounds of The Cellars-Hohenort. Different seasons reveal the beauty of each garden; from the vibrant greens of the cooler season to the colourful blooms in spring, there is always something to admire.

If Hermanus is your preferred destination, then treat Dad to an Oceanside Weekend Getaway and Father’s Day lunch at The Marine, if you are lucky you might spot a whale or two.

Under two hours away it is easily both doable and different.  Hermanus never needs a prologue. Taking the coastal route around Betty’s Bay simply adds another feature to a special weekend outing.

If golf is still on your menu, Hermanus Pirate Golf and Splash Pad should fit the order. It is located a few hundred meters from our hotel along the coastal path, with an Italian ice cream parlour, the outdoor curio market and boutique shops. There is even an exclusive men’s store for a last-minute Father’s Day present.

Even if golf is not shortlisted for your visit to The Marine, our Father’s Day Lunch will make the top of anyone’s choice of restaurants. We have another special edition of ‘Rump Steak and Triple Cooked Chips,’ which would be hard to beat anywhere. Crème Brûlée with a twist of Vanilla needs no advertising space of its own. Which Dad will not appreciate a complimentary Old Harbour Lager on arrival?

Whichever destination you choose and whatever you choose to do, it’s all about Dad. He will appreciate wherever you take him because this day for him is all about family.
