Knitting for good on Mandela Day

19 July 2019

— by Malu Lambert —

The team at The Cellars-Hohenort picked up knitting needles in honour of Nelson Mandela for Mandela Day this year. Though it’s a project they have been working on for the last two months, carefully knitting baby beanies, booties, jerseys and blankets for newborns.

Yesterday the woollen wares were delivered to a local hospital by two members of The Liz McGrath Collection human resources team. They spent their 67 Minutes at the Groote Schuur neonatal maternity ward doing this. Anita Horn and Millias Chifundo met with Sister Hendry who showed them around the ward and introduced them to some of the moms and babies.

They gave each mom and baby; a baby blanket with a beanie, booty and jersey set.

They also had privilege to meet newborn twins, and Millias got permission from their mom to hold the little girls while she was sleeping.

The mommies and hospital staff were very grateful for the warm, woollen items knitted by The Cellars-Hohenort team.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to the knitting team for their beautiful, caring work:

And also to the team who stitched blanket blocks together and sewed buttons onto booties:
