One of the must-visit sites in the Tsitsikamma National Park is the Groot Boom, or ‘Big Tree’.
The site is located a short drive from The Plettenberg. To find the tree, drive towards the village of Storm’s River from Plettenberg Bay, looking out for the ‘Big Tree signpost’. The site is located just a short walk from the parking lot along a beautiful, lush forest path in dappled sunlight. The ‘Big Tree’ is an Outeniqua Yellowwood, native to the montane forests of Southern Africa, and is estimated to be between 600 and 1000 years old.
It’s said to be South Africa’s oldest and largest yellowwood, standing 36, 6 metres tall and with a trunk circumference of 9 metres (it’s said to take eight people to encircle its trunk). Tip: Feel like exploring more? Two trails start from this point; one of 2,6km and another of 4,2km.
