Blue Flag Beaches: in all of our destinations

The Cellars-Hohenort, The Marine and The Plettenberg are all located in areas with Blue Flag Beaches.

The term ‘Blue Flag’ is an annual international award given to beaches that meet a standard of excellence in the areas of safety, amenities, cleanliness, environmental information and environmental management.

This year 45 South African beaches have been awarded Blue Flag status—up from 39 in 2015.

Added to that 29 of these are located in the Western Cape itself. Almost half of these fall within our destinations! Cape Town, Plettenberg Bay and Hermanus have 12 Blue Flag Beaches between them.

*Camps Bay

Four of Cape Town's beaches have earned Blue Flag status, they are: Camps Bay, Clifton 4th, Bikini Beach and Strandfontein.

Tip: Camps Bay is a stunning white sand beach framed by mountain views; near here is the ever popular Clifton 4th, one of a series of small granite boulder sheltered coves. Bikini Beach is a great swimming beach due to its warmer water, while Strandfontein is perfect for families as it has the largest tidal swimming pool in Southern Africa.

*Keurboomstrand

Plettenberg Bay has received Blue Flag status for five beaches: Robberg 5, Keurboomstrand, Nature’s Valley, Lookout Beach, and the newest to join Blue Flag status is The Dunes.
Tip: at Robberg Beach, relax on a beach in a nature reserve and look out for marine creatures playing in the waves. Keurboomstrand is a popular swimming spot and is perfect long, ocean-side walks. Nature’s Valley is ideal for swimming and relaxing; but also a great place to go stargaze thanks to a lack of light pollution in the area. Lookout Beach is perfect for families: the little ones can splash in the lagoon and build sandcastles on the shore. There are plenty of activities for all ages too, including kayaking on the lagoon or surfing in the sea. The Dunes offers a sheltered and pristine beach, look out for dolphins playing in the waves.

*Grotto Beach

Three of Hermanus's beaches have earned Blue Flag status once again, they are: Grotto Beach, Hawston Beach and Kleinmond Beach.
Tip: Not only do families love to play on Grotto Beach, but it’s an ideal swimming spot too. At Hawston Beach enjoy a white stretch of sand with scenic mountains. There’s a wide range of birdlife here too. While, Kleinmond Beach is one of the best beaches to enjoy whale-watching from as well as being a great spot for swimming and surfing too.
